What is a BER?
BER stands for "Building Energy Rating". A BER is a bit like the energy label that you see on household electrial items such as fridges and washing machines. Put simply - these ratings tell you at a glace how energy efficient an appliance is on a rating from A - G. In the same way the new BER certificates will tell potential home owners just how energy efficient any particular house is with A being the most efficient and G being the least.
From 1st January 2009 all homes being sold or rented must have a BER certificate. BERs will be carried out by specially trained BER assessors, who must be registered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI). A list of BER Assessors is available on the SEI website .
